Filipina Artist’s Work Featured on Starbucks Christmas Cups

This year, the red Starbucks holiday cups are being released, featuring the works of the customers; one of which belongs to a Filipina artist named Anz Soza. Her design will be one of the 13 chosen to be printed on Starbucks’ holiday cups.

Last year’s Christmas season, Starbucks released their holiday cup design: plain flat red without any embelishments (which stirred up controversy). Starbucks meant the cups to be a “blank canvas” that encourages “customers to tell their Christmas stories in their own way” by making their own designs onto the plain red cup.

Anz is currently based in Dubai, and her design features hanging Christmas ornaments and dreamcatchers. After her work were released worldwide, she said she felt overwhelmed at being chosen from thousands of entries from different parts of the world.

Masayang-masaya. Sobrang overwhelming kasi ito yung pangarap ko,” she says. “Sobrang proud ako kasi nag-iisa tayong Pinoy dun.

(Very happy. Very overwhelming because this is my dream. I’m very proud since only one Filipino design was featured.)

This was not the first time the 32-year-old Fine Arts major drew on a cup. She says that drawing on Starbucks cups started as a hobby when her husband brought her home the drink, and since last year, she has drawn on 83 cups.

Anz’ design, together with the other holiday cups, will be served in more than 25,000 Starbucks stores in 75 countries.
